Vodafone launches in-flight roaming so you can use your own data to connect on the plane

Vodafone already has a popular $5 a day roaming package for travellers but now it has launched a new in-flight roaming service to allow passengers to use their own data to make calls, text and browse during their flight.

Some airlines already offer in flight wi-fi which can be quite expensive and with a limited amount of data.

But now Vodafone will allow customers to enjoy in-flight roaming for $5 a day on selected airlines using their plan’s included data.

The participating airlines are Aer Lingus, Air Belgium, Asiana Airlines, Bangladesh Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Egyptair, Emirates, Etihad Airways, Eva Air, Airyways, Kuwait Airways, Lufthansa, Malaysia Airlines, SAS, Singapore Airlines, Swiss, Air Portugal, Turkish Airlines and Uzbekistan Airways.

Vodafone customers on an eligible plan can connect to in-flight roaming once the plane has passed 20,000 feet.

Passengers need to turn off flight mode before they can connect to a network and use your plan’s included data calls and texts.

Vodafone says users will be able to experience upload and download speeds similar to 3G which will allow customers to send and receive emails, text messages and browse the web and use their social media apps.

It would also be technically possible to make and receive calls mid-flight.

The $5 inflight roaming will last for 24 hours and users can continue to roam if their destination is an eligible roaming country at no extra cost within that period.

“We have customers joining Vodafone every day who are sick of the great roaming rip off. Whether you’re in another country or on your way there, Vodafone is working hard to help you stay connected and save money,” said Kieren Cooney, Vodafone Group Executive, Consumer.

“For a flat fee of only $5 per day, customers can use their device to stay in touch with loved ones, share their travel selfies, and even get some work done, all while cruising above the clouds. Best of all, customers won’t have to worry about any hidden costs or bill shock when they arrive home.”
