Watch a Tesla Model X tow a Qantas 787 Dreamliner

Melbourne Airport was the site of a world first today when a Tesla Model X P100D hitched a Qantas Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner to achieve the heaviest tow by an electric production passenger vehicle.

The all electric SUV successfully towed the 130-tonne aircraft to achieve a Guinness World Record.

The dual electric motors on the Model X P100D easily provided enough torque to haul the 787 for almost 300m.

Today’s record is the first step in a partnership between Qantas and Tesla to showcase innovation for customers and increase sustainability in the transport industry.

Tesla owners who are also Qantas Frequent Flyer members will have their mileage offset both in their electric vehicles and in the air for the month of June thanks to the Qantas Future Planet Program.

The airline will also be supplying charging solutions with Tesla High Power Wall Connectors at Qantas valet facilities in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide to provide Model S and Model X owners with a charge while they travel.

And it’s not the first time Tesla and Qantas have been together on the runway.

Back in 2016, Qantas pitted a 737 800 against the Tesla Model S P90D in a race down the runway.
