We’re sitting on $62bn worth of pre-loved items we can sell according to Gumtree

We are sitting on up to $62 billion of preloved items in their home according to the latest research from Gumtree, Australia’s online community marketplace.

The Trading in the Circular Economy report has revealed that an average Australian household has $6,964 worth of items lying around their home that could be sold.

That’s an increase of 32 percent from the 2021 estimate of $5,300 worth of items in your home.

It works out to be an average of 21 sellable, preloved and unwanted items in every home.

But it’s not unusual for Aussie’s to have more than 30 items they could sell with the most common segments being closing, shoes and accessories (42 per cent), games and toys (28 per cent), home, decor and furniture (25 per cent), electronic goods (24 per cent) and books (24 per cent).

The report also found it’s not just about making money but reducing our impact on landfill by upcycling an item to extend its life.

The study has also shown 39 per cent of those who sold their preloved items are spending that money to help offset expenses associated with the rising cost of living and inflation.

This year the most popular items that sold the fastest were clothing, shoes and accessories (70 per cent) followed by games and toys (10 per cent), electronic goods (10 per cent), home, decor and furniture (9 per cent) and books (8 per cent).

And the items that made the most money were clothing, shoes and accessories (21 per cent) followed by electronic goods (12 per cent), home, decor and furniture (11 per cent), games and toys (10 per cent) and books (9 per cent).

Planet Ark has once again joined Gumtree putting together this report.

The findings revealed 76 per cent of Australians are trading for sustainable reasons with 64 per cent looking to embrace the circular economy as a means of improving the environment and 85 per cent saving items from ending up in landfill over the last year.
