Tech Guide takes a hands-on look at the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5 and Z Fold5

Tech Guide has taken a hands-on first look at the new Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 and Z Flip 5 at the Unpacked launch event held in Seoul last night.

These are the fifth generation foldable devices from Samsung and there have been various improvements and enhancements over last year’s models.

Since Samsung introduced their first foldable devices back in 2019, other brands have joined the foldable market including Google, Oppo and Motorola and the category is growing with more customers adopting the new form factor.

These latest models from Samsung may just tempt fence sitters into purchasing a foldable device once and for all.

SAMSUNG Z FLIP 5

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5 is, we think, the star of the show because it offers a lot of changes and improvements over last year’s model.

The biggest change is the huge front screen which allows you to do so much with the device while it’s still folded.

The Z Flip5 is the perfect solution for those customers who would prefer a larger display but not be burdened with a large device.

It has a 6.2 inch screen that literally folds in half to fit more easily in your pocket or in your bag.

And that front screen means much of the functionality is still literally at your fingertips while still in the folded position.

You can even still take selfies and line up your shot on that front screen.

In fact, all you need to do is hold up your palm up to the screen and that will trigger the shutter and give you a three second countdown to capture your image.

The other huge improvement is with the Flex Hinge that shaves 2.4mm off the thickness of the device.

The Z Flip5 now folds completely flat thanks to that improved hinge which makes it even more trim and attractive to customers.

The cameras on the Z Flip5 are 12-megapixel wide-angle and 12-megapixel ultra-wide and offer decent quality but are still not up to the S23 or Z Fold5 standard.

SAMSUNG Z FOLD 5

The customer who would purchase the Samsung Z fold 5 is completely different to the user who would be attracted to the Z Flip 5.

The Z Fold 5 is aimed at the high end user who loves to multitask and enjoy their content on the move.

While there aren’t many changes to this year’s model, it still offers remarkable power and performance.

The biggest design change comes with the new thinner flex hinge that allows the device to fold completely flat and reduce the thickness by 2.4mm.

That might not sound like much, but it does make the device noticeably less bulky than last year’s model.

The other big change we noticed was with the screens which were definitely brighter and punchier than the four generation models.

The main 7.6 inch screen is up to 30 per cent brighter with a peak brightness of 1715 nits.

In terms of screen sizes, the front and inside displays are the same size as the Z Fold4.

On the multitasking front, the taskbar has improved so you can jump into your most frequently used apps even faster and run up to three apps at the same time.

While some may not see many changes from last year’s model, you have to remember that anyone with a Z Fold4 will probably not seek this latest upgrade.

But users of older Fold devices, and even customers coming from a regular smartphone, will still enjoy a remarkable experience.
