Belkin commits to make the bulk of their products from recycled plastics

Globally recognised consumer electronics company Belkin has developed new materials for its products and packaging in 2023 that will vastly reduce the impact on the environment.

The material consists of up to 75 per cent post-consumer recycled plastics and will be used to manufacture Belkin’s popular wireless chargers, power banks, wall chargers and car chargers.

This transition will save more than 7,000 metric tons of carbon emissions and reduce CO2-eq emissions for these products by 67 per cent.

Belkin recently celebrated its 40th birthday and is well on its way to becoming 100 per cent carbon neutral in scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2025.

This commitment will look at all areas of the business and includes looking reducing single use plastics in packaging. Recently there has been a 90 per cent reduction in some products.

There are three plastic alternatives in the industry:

– Recycled plastic (PIR), a method that reuses plastic materials collected at a factory during mass production

– Bioplastics, which uses materials from renewable feedstocks such as plants and woodchips

– Ocean plastics, which reuses plastic waste collected from the ocean

“When we think about the difference a company of our size and influence can make on the planet, moving away from using virgin plastics in our products is an obvious decision,” said Steve Malony, CEO, Belkin.

“I am proud to work alongside the teams that made this shared vision a reality.

“Their dedication to doing the right thing inspires me and together, we will continue to work towards a more sustainable future.”

The following products will ship with the new PCR material within the first half of 2023:

Magnetic Car Vent Mount

BOOST↑CHARGE™ USB-C PD 3.0 PPS Wall Charger 25W

BOOST↑CHARGE™ Dual USB-C PD Wall Charger 40W

BOOST↑CHARGE™ PRO 4-Port GaN Charger 108W

BOOST↑CHARGE PRO Dual USB-C® GaN Wall Charger with PPS 45W

BOOST↑CHARGE PRO Dual USB-C® GaN Wall Charger with PPS 65W

Aesthetically, there will be little difference in the look and feel of the Belkin products and the Belkin PCR products.

Customers will be able to tell whether it’s a PCR product with clear labeling and callouts on the packaging itself including “Made with Recycled Plastic Products” and “100% Plastic Free Packaging.”
