Canon unveils dual fisheye lens so you can create high quality 3D VR content

Canon has revealed the latest innovation for its EOS R system – a new virtual reality capture lens which fits into the RF lens mount so users can create 3D 180-degree VR content.

The RF 5.2mm F2.8L Dual Fisheye lens was developed in response to the growth in demand for VR content in many sectors like training, travel, sport, live events and documentaries.

This is Canon’s first ever interchangeable VR lens and makes virtual content creation easier than ever while still providing high quality and realism.

The dual fisheye lenses have and ultra-wide 190-degree field of view and enables projection of two images into the camera’s single sensor in perfect alignment.

Having this lens arrangement means content creators can achieve stunning results with a single camera – something which usually requires a more complex two-camera system.

Canon has also created a new VR software application called EOS VR Utility and a plug-in (VR Plug-In for Adobe Premiere Pro to streamline the post-production workflow from input to output.

The VR content can be exported in numerous codecs up to 8K in file size for video output and is playable on suitable VR headsets.

But the Canon RF 5.2mm F2.8L Dual Fisheye lens is not cheap with a recommended retail price of $3,849.

It is also covered by Canon’s five-year warranty.
