Meta unveils new Quest 3 headset and Ray-Ban smart glasses

Meta has unveiled new wearable products – the Quest 3 mixed reality headset and updated Ray-Ban smart glasses – and new AI technology at its Meta Connect event in Menlo Park.

Meta chief executive Mark Zuckerberg announced the products at the event saying they were designed to bring the real world and the virtual world together.

Zuckerberg described the new Meta Quest 3 headset as one of the best value headsets in the industry implying it would be much more affordable than Apple’s upcoming Vision Pro headset which will be priced at $US3,499.

Priced at $799, the Quest 3 headset will be available in mid-October and with 10 times the resolution of the Quest 2.

The device is powered by the Snapdragon XR2 from Qualcomm to give it enough power to run the latest graphics intensive games including Asgard’s Wrath II and Assassin’s Creed Nexus.

The new headset will allow user to play games, exercise and stream content in 4K and immersive 3D audio.

The new Touch Plus controllers have also been redesigned with a more streamlined look and now offer haptic feedback.

Also announced at Meta Connect was the new Ray-Ban smart glasses which will have Meta AI onboard and along a camera to capture images and shoot video.

The built-in Meta AI chatbot assistant will also be in your ear so you can do things like translate signs that you’re looking at.

The glasses have a five-microphone array so you can use your voice to issue commands along with open style speakers.

Onboard are 12-megapixel cameras that record up to a minute of full high definition video at a time or stream live to Instagram and Facebook for up to 30 minutes.

Meta has once again partnered with Ray-Ban parent company EssilorLuxottica and will be available in three styles and will be priced at $US299 ahead of an October 17 release.
