Netflix has begun password sharing crackdown in Australia – here are your options

It’s started. Netflix has begun its crackdown on sharing passwords between households in Australia and has contacted subscribers about their options.

The days of sharing a spare login with your parents, grandparents or children who no longer live at home has come to an end

The email sent out to customers today says that your Netflix account is only for you and the people you live with within your household.

It also outlines your options if someone outside your home wants to access your account.

If the person living outside your household is already accessing your account, Netflix says they can transfer their profile and create a new membership for themselves that they will have to pay for.

The other option outlined in the email was buying an extra member for your account.

For $7.99 a month you can share Netflix account with someone who doesn’t live with you.

More than 100 million households worldwide share their passwords so people not living in the same home can all still enjoy the service.

Netflix has already cracked down on password sharing in Canada, NZ, Portugal and Spain and now it is Australia’s turn.

Customers will still be able to travel and use Netflix on their personal devices or in a vacation home with a sign-in code that offers them up to seven consecutive days of access.

Time will tell how Australians will react to this move by Netflix which has been designed to increase revenue and membership despite the streaming giant generating $US31.6 billion in revenue in 2022.
