Prime Video’s new Dialogue Boost will make voices in TV shows and movies clearer

Prime Video is offering a new accessibility feature to make dialogue in movies and TV shows clearer than ever before to offer a more comfortable and enjoyable viewing experience.

The new Dialogue Boost innovation will allow users to select dialogue volume levels on any device that offers Prime Video.

This means the volume of dialogue increases relative to background music and effects so viewers who are hard of hearing can still enjoy the latest movies and TV shows like anyone else.

“At Prime Video, we are committed to building an inclusive, equitable, and enjoyable streaming experience for all our customers,” said Raf Soltanovich, VP of Technology at Prime Video and Amazon Studios.

“Our library of captioned and audio described content continues to grow, and by leveraging our technological capabilities to create industry-first innovations like Dialogue Boost, we are taking another step to create a more accessible streaming experience.”

Dialogue Boost analyses the original audio and identifies parts of the film or show which may be difficult to hear above background music and other sound effects.

From here, speech patterns are isolated and the audio is upscaled to make it louder and clearer.

This technique uses AI to enhance portions of spoken dialogue rather than an overall application of the centre channel in the home theatre system.

Viewers can check a show’s title page to see whether Dialogue Boost is available.

To set up Dialogue Boost, users need to look at the audio and subtitles drop down menu in the top right corner and, if available, they will see audio tracks labelled “English Dialogue Boost: medium” and “Dialogue Boost: high”.

Dialogue Boost will work across all devices that run the Prime Video app.

Some of the Amazon originals with dialogue boost include Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, The Marvellous Mrs Maisel and Harlem.

Supported movies include The Big Sick, Beautiful Boy and Being the Ricardos.

The feature will extend to other titles later this year.
