When we talk about smart home ecosystems, there aren’t many bigger than Samsung’s SmartThings ecosystem, which includes mobile devices, AV products, monitors and home appliances and more.

The idea of a connected home has been around for years, and the SmartThings app continues to pique the interest of consumers, with 35 per cent of Australians surveyed by Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd seeing the appeal of smart homes[1][2].

Whilst the SmartThings app enables Australians to connect their compatible smart devices within the home, it also connects certain mobile devices, with compatible Samsung Galaxy smartphones, watches, tablets, Buds and SmartTag2 also operating within the ecosystem.

And the benefits aren’t just about convenience – it can also help you monitor your energy consumption as well.

Some Samsung appliances have built-in technology which can learn about your usage patterns and load sizes, which can help users monitor energy output to provide personalised automation to suit your lifestyle, routines and preferences.

Naturally, Samsung products work together seamlessly but the SmartThings app can also work with other compatible connected devices a part of your smart home’s ecosystem, such as third party products[3] from other brands which are compatible with Matter[4].

Matter is a new connectivity standard that makes compatible products talk the same language and work together on the same network. Think of Matter as the smart home version of Bluetooth.

Bluetooth makes it possible for virtually all headphones to connect wirelessly to any smartphone regardless of the brand.

Matter will do the same thing, connecting a variety of compatible smart home products to your home network and centralising them within the SmartThings mobile app.

On the mobile side, the most obvious SmartThings connection is between a Galaxy smartphone, Galaxy Buds, Galaxy Watch and Galaxy Tab.

Once the case is opened, the Buds are immediately recognised by your compatible Galaxy smartphone to enter pairing mode for connection.

And the controls are also brought to your fingertips so you can adjust the Buds’ settings and easily control your media via the Galaxy Wearable app.

And with Galaxy Buds Auto Switching users can seamlessly switch between their compatible Galaxy smartphone to the Galaxy Tab. So this means you can start a movie on the phone and continue watching it on the tablet without skipping a beat.

When the Galaxy Watch is in the mix and paired to a Galaxy smartphone, you can receive notifications and incoming calls alongside other features including the ability to take a photo from your wrist using the Camera Controller on the Galaxy Watch.

If you get a call on your Galaxy smartphone it’s also possible to answer the call on the Galaxy Tab if they are both signed into the same Samsung account.

Your Samsung TV can also be the hub of your smart home.

It can be your home’s mission control so you can monitor all your compatible smart connected devices including select appliances, lights, cameras and smart switches. And you can even control your Samsung smart TV from your compatible Samsung Galaxy phone[5]– simply open the SmartThings app, choose your compatible device and use your phone as the remote control.

Looking at something on your phone but want to see it on the bigger screen of your TV? You can also mirror your compatible phone and your TV screen will show the same content.

You can create scenes and routines from the Smart TV SmartThings dashboard. Users can easily create a scene that creates the right viewing atmosphere for a movie.

A movie night scene can be created to switch sources to the disc player or favourite streaming service while the same time having the connected smart lights dim down and fade out.

SmartThings app notifications can also be set to be received on the Samsung Smart Monitor M7 and M8 which can be your computer monitor one minute and turn into an entertainment hub the next with the same Tizen operating system as found on Samsung smart TVs.

The ecosystem created from all this connectivity is compelling.  There are so many customisation options that you can set up if you have compatible devices. For example, if someone is at the door, an alert can appear on the TV that the video doorbell is ringing. You can also be informed once your laundry cycle in your Samsung washing machine is complete, or if you left the door of the Samsung Family Hub refrigerator open.

If you have a Samsung Family Hub Refrigerator you can also stream the TV signal to the screen so you’re not missing a moment of the movie or sporting event if you’re in the kitchen making a snack.

The Samsung Family Hub includes a 21-inch display you can access apps on and even order your shopping right there on the screen and have it delivered to your door.

A favourite feature of the Family Hub is the ability to look inside the fridge via the Built-In cameras which can be accessed via the SmartThings app so you can see if you need milk, bread or butter and anything else while you’re at the shops.

This way you’re not buying another carton of milk or more bread if you already have them. Saves you money and save you wasting food.

Samsung’s wide range of smart appliances like the Bespoke AI™ Washers and Dryers and the Bespoke Jet Bot AI+ are a great way to bring the SmartThings ecosystem in your home.

With SmartThings you will understand how easily it can be used and optimised to make your life easier.

When you have the Samsung SmartThings ecosystem in full swing, you’ll wonder how you ever lived without it.

That’s not a knife….. now that’s a knife!! This week on The Best Movies You’ve Never Seen podcast we’re watching Crocodile Dundee starring Paul Hogan – the movie became a worldwide hit when it was released in 1986.

Crocodile Dundee tells the story of Mick “Crocodile” Dundee who is the subject of a story by an American reporter about how he survived a croc attack before heading to New York for a real “fish out of water” experience.

Stephen watched Crocodile Dundee in the theatre – just like everyone else in Australia – and got to experience Australia being the flavour of the month in the US on a football end of season trip.

Trevor can’t remember the movie – he watched it years so this latest watch was as good as watching it for the first time.

We go through the memorable scenes and share some interesting facts, behind the scenes tidbits, trivia, fact v fiction and other things you don’t know about the film.

Hisense has made a breakthrough with its Mini LED X UXAU televisions that offer the larger screen sizes Australian customers are craving and with the audio and video quality to provide the ultimate experience.

Tech Guide looked at the 75-inch Mini LED X TV (75UXAU) and we were impressed by the brightness and accuracy of the picture and the superb punch of the audio.

The Hisense 75UXAU has a large central stand and a thin bezel around the stunning 4K screen as well as two speakers on the left and right edges.

Under the hood is the Mini-LED X technology which has introduced a whole new level of picture quality.

There are more than 20,000 Mini-LED lights which gives the TV a peak brightness of up to 2,500 nits on the 85-inch model and up to 1,500 nits on the 75-inch.

These tiny lights form more than 5,000 full array local dimming zones which provides bright whites, darkest blacks and all the resulting details at every increment in between.

The result is a remarkable level of detail whether it’s the fur of an animal, the leaves of a tree, a person’s eye lashes or the threads of material on a jumper.

One of many movies and TV shows we watched was Star Wars Episode VIII – The Last Jedi and the detail of Kylo Ren’s mask and his hair (after he destroys the mask) was quite impressive as were the feathers on the Porgs and the detail of Rey’s and Luke Skywalker’s faces and costumes.

The other obvious benefit is the contrast – lighter and darker colours can be side by side and still manage to keep their own brightness and intensity.

Black levels were quite respectable, and while not to the level of an OLED TV, it certainly wasn’t far off it.

This precision was missing from traditional LED displays with larger backlights and far fewer dimming zones.

But Mini-LED X adds razor sharp reality.

Another feature that does some of the heavy lifting is the Hi-View Engine X powered by AI to enhance the image and sound quality even further.

It is designed to act like the human brain simulating brain patterns with 16-bit computing power with 65,536 level of brightness at its disposal to provide the best possible outcome in real time.

But that’s not all the TV has up its sleeve.

The foundation of Hisense’s TV quality over the years is its proprietary quantum dot technology which is responsible for coming up with brilliant natural colour and the right skin tones and other hues.

In fact, Hisense’s quantum dot technology can recognise more than a billion shades so you can enjoy vivid and distinct colour no matter what you’re watching.

Skin tones were always consistent and accurate as were trees and oceans and animals.

Also onboard the Hisense Mini-LED X TV is HDR 10+ Adaptive and Dolby Vision IQ which take the viewing conditions into account before accurately depicting how bright or dark the scene will be.

What also impressed us was the viewing angle. So even if you’re out on the wing and didn’t score the plum spot in the centre of the couch you can still enjoy the same impressive picture quality.

Australians tend to have their TV in a large bright open plan room and Hisense 75UXAU can handle it with hardly any reflection so there is nothing that will distract you from the amazing picture.

On the audio side, the Hisense TV also packs quite a punch with CineStage X 4.1.2 so it creates a brilliant surround soundscape to go with the brilliant picture and entice even more of your senses.

It can handle Dolby Atmos and DTS HD so you’ll be hearing quality audio coming from all directions.

A closer inspection of the TV showed not only the two sided speakers but also two speakers on the back of the TV as well

We were impressed by the directional and surround sound that’s usually only achievable with a soundbar – but this was all coming from the TV. Simply remarkable.

And if you’re a gamer or sports lover, the Hisense TV has got you well and truly covered.

Who wouldn’t want to play games on the best screen in the house.

The 144Hz Game Mode Pro brings to the table Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) and Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) so you can see the game in its finest form with Dolby Vision making the gameplay look its best.

And with 200 Smooth Motion Rate and AI Sports Mode, you’ll think you’re live at the game with lifelike smoothness and noise reduction thanks to a dynamic algorithm that’s designed to enhance the fast moving action.

Another strong feature of the Hisense Mini-LED X TV is the VIDAA U7 Smart TV operating system which allows you to get to your favourite streaming apps and find your content in seconds.

The easy to navigate layout puts all your viewing options front and centre.

The Hisense TV is also compatible with all the major streaming apps including Netflix, YouTube, Disney+, Apple TV+, Foxtel, Stan, Kayo, Binge, Prime Video as well as all the free to air catch up apps and much, much more.

The Hisense Mini-LED X is available now and is priced at $4,999 for the 75-inch and $9,999 for the 85-inch.

Retail pricing may be slightly lower than these prices – that’s up to each individual retailer.

For us the 75-inch model represents the best value – we’ve seen it as cheap as $3,880 and the 85-inch as low as $8,995.

VERDICT

The Hisense Mini-LED X is a stunning TV that offers both high quality picture and high quality audio out the box. This rare combination will offer a brilliant home entertainment experience.

More than 2.6 billion personal records have been compromised in data breaches in the last two years – and it’s only getting worse – but it does emphasise the need for end-to-end encryption in the cloud.

Apple published an independent study by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) professor Stuart Mednick which showed data breaches have tripled in the last 10 years.

In the last two years alone, more than 2.6 billion personal records have been exposed.

The way companies are addressing these threats is by employing end to end encryption.

More than 80 per cent of breaches in 2023 involved data stored in the cloud with attacks targeting cloud infrastructure doubling from 2021 to 2022.

Last year Apple launched advanced data protection for iCloud which uses end to end encryption and offers Apple’s highest level of cloud data security with the ability to further protect your important data even in the case of a data breach.

iCloud can provide protection for 14 sensitive data categories using end to end encryption for things like passwords in iCloud Keychain, health data and even protecting your notes and photos.

“Bad actors continue to pour enormous amounts of time and resources into finding more creative and effective ways to steal consumer data, and we won’t rest in our efforts to stop them,” said Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering.

“As threats to consumer data grow, we’ll keep finding ways to fight back on behalf of our users by adding even more powerful protections.”

The report shows a dramatic rise in data breaches since companies started digitising users personal information – and hackers are using more sophisticated methods to get around security that previously held them back.

Cyber criminals steal credentials or information that allows them to target employees or systems within the organisation.

And even when customers do the right thing to secure their sensitive data, the risk is still there from hackers if their information is stored in a readable form by the organisation they trusted with that information.

Recent examples of global data breaches included 23andMe – a genetic testing company which potentially exposed 300TB of user data in October 2023.

Global clothing brand Forever 21 was hacked in early 2023 and exposed personal and health insurance information of more than half a million current and former employees.

MGM Resorts, the global hospitality and entertainment company, was the victim of a ransomware attack in September 2023 which resulted in operational outages across its properties in the US, China and Japan.

In Australia there were two major data breaches – one against Latitude Financial and the other targeting health insurance provider Medibank.  Together this impacted more than 23 million people.

The Australian Cyber Security Centre says reports of cyber crime have increased by 23 per cent in the 2023 fiscal year alone.

Apple developed Lockdown Mode for anyone being targeted with extreme threats like mercenary spyware because of who they are or what they do.

Apple also has Advanced Data Protection for iCloud which can protect against these growing threats and keep most user data in iCloud protected even in the event of a data breach.

The number of ransomware attacks in the first three quarters of 2023 has increased by almost 70 per cent compared to the same period in 2022.

And Australia is in the top four countries being targeted for ransomware alongside the U S, the UK and Canada.

Vodafone and the Commonwealth Bank have formed a new intelligence partnership to protect their customers from the growing number of SMS scams.

This pilot programme will see Vodafone and CBA sharing any SMS scam-related intelligence in almost real time.

Vodafone will be able to identify and disrupt the scammers while the Commonwealth Bank could potentially implement proactive blocks on suspected fraudulent payments.

As we head into the festive season James Roberts, general manager of group fraud at CBA, says there are even greater risks at this time of the year.

“Our latest data shows that fraudulent text and email messages are the number one scam trend impacting our customers,” Roberts says.

“This phenomenon, otherwise known as ‘phishing’, involves fraudsters tricking unsuspecting customers to click on an embedded link and share their online banking and card details, as well as personal information.

“Not only are scammers becoming increasingly sophisticated, but we tend to see an uptick in attempted and successful scams at certain times of the year, such as the festive season.

“With this heightened risk, we recommend people remain alert for potential scams, including those delivered via SMS with messages imitating major courier or postal companies.

“This pilot and timely intelligence sharing between CommBank and Vodafone allows us to proactively investigate and analyse the latest SMS scams in near real-time to ultimately help disrupt, detect and proactively block fraudulent payments.”

This partnership comes at a time when stats show text messages are the most popular way for cyber criminals to target potential victims.

This year more than $24.5 million has been lost to these types of scams already.

“Keeping Australians safe and secure is a key priority at Vodafone. It is the reason why in 2020 Vodafone set up a cross-industry fraud forum, which still meets regularly today,” says Simone Sant, General Counsel and General Manager Corporate Security at Vodafone.

“This forum brings together banks, telcos, postal services, law enforcement and

regulators to work together to combat scams.

“Working with industry leaders like Commonwealth Bank allows us to share information and resources to help protect our customers and empower thousands of Australians to hang up on scammers.”

Safety and security are the CBA’s highest priority says Mr. Roberts.

“We encourage people to remain cautious and to stop, check and reject. If you think you have been a victim of a fraud or scam, contact your bank immediately,” he says.

Vodafone has blocked more than 67.8 million SMS scams from reaching its customers in Australia, but cybercriminals are always on the lookout to find new ways scam innocent people out of their hard earned money.

As we approach Christmas Vodafone has blocked more than 17.6 million SMS scams in September and October alone – that’s a 45 per cent year on year increase.

Meanwhile CBA has invested more than $750m to protect and defend customers from cyber security threats another fraud and scams.

“By collaborating closely with Vodafone, we’re focused on helping to minimise financial harm associated with the ever-evolving threat of SMS scams.

“There is much more to do and taking a collaborative and cross-industry approach is essential,” Mr Roberts added.

The collaboration between CBA and Vodafone builds on a suite of recent announcements from CBA aimed at helping protect customers from scams, including:

– National rollout of Scam Indicator – technology which was conceived and developed in partnership with Quantium Telstra to help protect joint Telstra and CBA customers

– Partnership with Optus’ Call Stop campaign

– Extending industry-leading NameCheck technology to other organisations who process payments

– Introducing holds, declines and limits on payments to cryptocurrency exchanges

–  In-app caller verification CallerCheck technology to give customers peace of mind CBA is genuinely calling them

Tips to stay safe:

  1. Stop – does a call, email or text seem off? The best thing to do is stop. Take a breath. Real organisations won’t put you under pressure to act instantly.
  1. Check – ask someone you trust or contact the organisation the message claims to be from.
  2. Reject – if you’re unsure, delete the email or text and block the phone number. Change your passwords.

Additional information:

– We’ll never send an email or SMS asking for banking information like a NetBank Client ID, password, or NetCode; or include a link to login directly from an email or SMS

– If you’re ever unsure whether an email, message or phone call is legitimately from CommBank, please message us in the CommBank app, or visit us in a branch so we can assist you

– If someone calls you and claims to be from CommBank, you can ask them to verify their identity in the app using Callercheck

– To be safe, always navigate directly to NetBank yourself and log on from the site you know to be legitimate, rather than using any links in communications.

–  You can report suspicious emails or texts to hoax@cba.com.au then delete them straight after. Don’t reply or engage with them.

The new Tesla Model 3 has received a significant redesign with a number of new features which will make the already popular electric vehicle even more in demand.

Tech Guide got behind the wheel of the new 2024 Tesla Model 3 long range edition which starts at $71,900 plus on road costs.

The vehicle has a range of up to 629km with a top speed of 201km/h.

And it can go from 0 to 100km/h in just 4.4 seconds.

On the outside there are a few obvious changes with a sleeker and more aerodynamic look.

We noticed there are less curves on the vehicle and a lot more straight lines to give it a more aggressive stance.

It has new wing-shaped headlights which now have integrated fog lamps to help improve night driving.

Around the back there’s also a new style of taillight which is designed as one piece and integrates into the tailgate.

But it’s when you go inside the car that you’ll notice even more changes.

The inside of the Tesla model 3 is already quite minimal and the new steering wheel takes that even further.

You’ll notice there are no stalks on either side of the wheel which normally allow drivers to access the wipers, indicators and to change gears.

These features have been taken away and placed as buttons on the wheel itself or on the large 15-inch central display.

The indicators are now on the steering wheel itself as buttons on the left side that allow you to indicate whether you’re turning left or right.

Drivers will hear and see the indicator on the screen along with the camera on that side of the car to give drivers a clear review of the direction they’re turning.

Naturally the indicator turns off once you’ve completed your turn – but what about when you change lanes?

We found the indicator automatically switched off when the vehicle saw us cross to the lane so there’s no need to press the button a second time to turn off the indicator for those quick lane changes.

The only issue we found with this was that when you are trying to indicate immediately after a turn it was hard to figure out which button to pressed because they were upside down or sideways.

It actually took our focus off the road to work out which was the right button we needed to press.

There’s no such problem with a stationary stalk which can be engaged no matter how far you’ve turned the wheel.

But what about the gear changer which is normally a stalk on the right hand side of the wheel?

To put the car into gear there is a section on the right edge of the display which allows you to slide up to drive, slide down to put the car into reverse and buttons to put the car into park or into neutral.

When you select drive by swiping up on the screen a large arrow is seen giving the driver the directional information.

And when swiping down to go into reverse, the rear cameras are automatically activated.

This didn’t take too much getting used to but if you are making a series of quick turns or reversing out of a tight space your arm is moving a fair bit.

But there is another option near the rear view mirror which give drivers push button controls to put the car into park, reverse and to turn on the hazard lights.

In this position some drivers could see it as a bit of a hassle to have to raise your arm to change gears instead of having the effortless stalks literally at your fingertips while your hands are still safely on the wheel.

Another thing you won’t find in the Tesla Model 3 is a driver cluster – something the previous Model 3 left out as well.

This means drivers have to glance to their left at the centre screen to see their speed and other information while they’re driving.

A feature that the Model 3 is crying out for is a heads-up display (HUD) so drivers can see their speed and other vital information as they are looking through the windscreen at the road.

This would surely make up for the fact that there is no small screen in front of the steering wheel and allow drivers to literally keep their eyes on the road while still seeing how fast they’re going along with navigation instructions and other information.

Inside the new Tesla Model 3 there is plenty of room with plenty of headroom and legroom for yourself and your passengers.

I’m pretty tall and I found there was plenty of room to sit comfortably. And the rear passengers could be seated comfortably as well.

In the central console there’s also a generous amount of storage space including two cup holders and two large storage areas.

There are also two wireless smart phone chargers as well so you can be charging while driving.

The Tesla Model 3 also has an accent light which runs from the passenger door across the dashboard and around to the driver’s door.

And, of course, drivers are able to choose from more than 200 colours via the main display to suit their taste or your mood.

One of the trademark features of the Tesla model 3 is the large 15 inch display which basically puts nearly every control at your fingertips as well as giving you access to the maps, settings and other apps to stream music or to view content.

You can’t view content while you’re driving of course but while charging or waiting you can fire up Netflix or Disney+ and YouTube.

But there is a second screen in the car for the rear passengers.

This 8-inch display allows them to connect their headphones via Bluetooth to stream their own music in the back seat or access the car’s Spotify account.

The rear display also gives those backseat passengers access to Netflix, Disney+ and YouTube so they can enjoy streaming content and keep themselves entertained without disturbing the driver and front passenger.

This rear screen also gives them control of the air conditioning.

On the storage side, the front trunk has adequate space for your groceries or a carry-on bag if you’re taking someone to the airport.

In the back is a surprisingly large boot space which can easily fit your golf clubs and other larger items.

There’s even a sub trunk space below a small panel that also offers a large amount of storage.

It’s now also a much quieter ride inside the Tesla model 3 thanks to the new 360-degree acoustic glass which cuts out a lot of the road noise.

What adds to the silence is the increased suspension bushings and improved seals along with the addition of a lot of other sound dampening materials.

The new Tesla Model 3 offers the same smoothness and driving performance as its predecessor with solid handling and plenty of zip when required.

The new Tesla model 3 is available to order now.

The rear wheel drive model starts at 61,900 plus on road costs and the dual motor all-wheel drive long range model we reviewed starts at $71,900.

According to the Tesla website, customers who order now will have their car delivered between January and April 2024.

VERDICT
The new redesign Tesla Model 3 is a huge step forward for Australia’s most popular electric car. The new design and numerous new features form an impressive upgrade and are certain to increase the already high demand.

Panasonic has released its latest SoundSlayer wearable speaker that can deliver an exciting audio experience while playing your favourite games.

The GNW10 SoundSlayer is the newest version of the SoundSlayer speaker released last year.

The lightweight speaker is worn around your neck and places four 38mm speakers right below your ears to add even more realism to your game.

“The GNW10 SoundSlayer delivers an immersive audio soundscape and intense gaming experience, along with crystal-clear communication,” says Fifi Tjiong, Product Marketing Manager – AV, Panasonic.

“It’s combined with an ergonomic design that removes pressure on ears and the head, so you can play hard in comfort.”

By connecting the transmitter to a PC or console via USB, this creates a wireless connection to the speaker so you’re not getting tangled up in cables.

The GNW10 SoundSlayer works with Windows 10/11 PCs, PS4 and PS5 consoles and the Nintendo Switch in TV mode only.

The speaker has new housing that’s 60 per cent larger than the previous version and offers improved audio and more powerful bass to help immerse you into the game even further.

The GNW10 SoundSlayer is an alternative to conventional headphones and players can still hear dialogue, music, sound effects and chat.

Play who connect the speaker to their PC can also install the SoundSlayer app which brings added functionality including accessing the equaliser, adjusting chat volume and choosing a sound mode.

The GNW10 SoundSlayer Is designed to be worn for hours and eliminates contact pressure around the ears and the top of your head that’s often the result of wearing headphones for extended periods.

Panasonic did a long study of ergonomics and created a housing that avoids contact with the collarbone and places no pressure on the trapezius muscles. The results in a comfortable lightweight fit.

Onboard is proprietary wireless technology that can transmit six channel audio signals on a dedicated 2.4Ghz band with the latency below 20ms so you can stay competitive and comfortable within the game.

There are also microphones on both sides of the speaker to make sure you’re heard during the game no matter where your head is facing.

The GNW10 SoundSlayer Also has AI voice control and noise cancelling that eliminates the ambient noise around you so your fellow players will only hear your voice loud and clear.

The Panasonic GNW10 SoundSlayer will be available in mid-December through Amazon and will be priced at $449.

In a shock move, Apple has decided to adopt RCS (rich communication services) that will improve texting between iPhone and Android and offer higher quality and security.

This means the whole green bubble and blue bubble inequity that exists for iPhone users and Android users will finally be at an end.

Apple has been under pressure from rival companies including Google and Samsung to make the move to RCS, but the Californian-based tech giant has stood its ground – until now.

Part of the reason why Apple resisted was based on the strength of its iMessage services which offered the highest quality and the most security when messages were shared between Apple devices.

But Apple has announced it will add “support for our RCS universal profile, the standard as currently published by the GSM association” sometime in 2024.

Apple says RCS would still work alongside iMessage which it said, “will continue to be the best and most secure message experience”.

Analysts say the move by Apple may have been directed from pressure by the European Union’s Digital Markets Act which had its eye on Apple’s iMessage on its list of services to make more universal.

We’ve already seen the power of the EU which forced Apple to include USB-C on its latest iPhone 15 to comply with a new EU directive a year ahead of the deadline in 2024.

Roger Entner, founder and lead analyst at Recon Analytics told Mobile World Live “champagne corks are popping on Google’s campus”.

“I’m surprised because Apple has driven iMessage as a massive differentiator. This is huge.”

iPhone users can tell if they receive a message from someone on an Android smart phone by the green bubble.

iPhone to iPhone iMessages appear blue and offer the highest quality and end to end encryption for the highest security.

iPhone to Android Messages use older technologies like SMS (short messaging service) and MMS (multimedia messaging service) which compresses images and videos when they are shared between these two systems.

What this imbalance did was drive users to neutral territory with apps like WhatsApp which treats iPhone and Android users equally.

What RCS will do is level the playing field and allow for messages to be sent as data over wi-fi along with encryption and read receipts.

After Apple adopts RCS, it will also provide typing indicators, so you’ll know if the person on Android has received the message and if they are responding.

Last year Google launched an online campaign to persuade Apple to adopt the RCS cross platform messaging protocol.

At that time Apple did not respond but the fact that the company is now on board with RCS is a massive turn around that has surprised the industry.

As late as September 2022, Apple CEO Tim Cook dismissed RCS because he had heard no demand from customers. Of course, all his customers are iPhone users.

Technology is supposed to help us but as our devices become a greater part of our daily lives and more and more people are using them the more tech-related injuries we’re hearing about.

A study in the US by Decluttr has revealed the most common tech-related injuries and how they are being caused.

TVs were the most dangerous items making up 30 per cent of tech-related injuries with the most significant being lower back strain while unpacking the TV or moving the TV to another room.

Smartphones were the next most dangerous device and accounted for 23 per cent of tech injuries.

The study revealed it was common for people walking and texting or talking at the same time were tripping or running into things or other people on the street which lead to sprained ankles, facial injuries and bruised elbows.

Another common occurrence was people holding their phones up while laying down only to drop them on their face and cause bruising and, in some cases, lacerations.

Computers, laptops and gaming consoles are also the most popular causes of poor posture which leads to neck, back pain and headaches.

The Decluttr study also revealed “tech neck” was also a common injury – in fact it made up 14 per cent of all injuries.

This is the result of people staring down at their smartphones for longer periods or looking down at laptops for most of the day.

And with more and more people working remotely it is less likely their working conditions would have the same ergonomic standards as working in an office.

There were also reports of earphones being lodged in people’s ear and small batteries being ingested.

“These figures are truly eye-opening and underscore a trend that’s been building for some time now,” says Liam Howley, Chief Marketing Officer at Decluttr.

“With technology becoming deeply entrenched in our day-to-day lives, it’s no surprise that accidents happen, however, we need to be more conscious of how our tech habits could cause a risk to ourselves and others.

“What’s encouraging to see is that some easy fixes can be made to ensure our tech is just that little bit more safe – sitting up in bed when texting, waiting until we are firmly on stop when out walking to check our devices, or upgrading your home office – these may seem obvious but a more mindful approach to technology will go a long way to reduce injury.”

Australian consumer electronics company Laser has unveiled and a new in-car touch screen display which allows drivers to enjoy the complete Apple CarPlay an Android Auto experience.

The Navigh8r 7-inch Portable Wireless Touchscreen is priced at $169 and brings Apple’s CarPlay and Android Auto to vehicles which previously didn’t support these interfaces.

The device offers convenient and safe access to your smartphone while you’re driving including navigation and music streaming apps.

While more recent vehicles already support CarPlay and Android Auto, drivers with older vehicles and many second hand car buyers now have an easy plug and play way to access this latest technology to make their cars smarter and to improve the driving experience.

The Navigh8r 7-inch Portable Wireless Touchscreen is a snap to install and intuitively easy to use.

Drivers can even use their voice with Siri or Google Assistant to access features and issue commands and even send and receive messages.

The integrated apps include navigation apps like Apple Maps, Google Maps, Waze and more along with music through Apple Music, Spotify, Amazon and many more.

On the messaging side users can access WhatsApp, text messages and easily make and receive calls and access their favourite podcasts.

“With road trip season just around the corner, and the rising demand around in-car smartphone integration, the role of portable options is becoming incredibly popular,” said Chris Lau, Managing Director of Laser Corporation and Head of the Navig8r brand.

“We see this as a handsfree extension of your phone, great for gifting and ideal to make any ‘dumb’ car a smart one.

“It also continues our ongoing commitment to deliver such a compelling option that is well under $200.”

Navig8r 7” Portable Wireless Touchscreen – Key Features:

 – Navigation – Whether the user prefers Apple Maps, Google Maps, Waze, or another mapping product, latest maps can be integrated with real time features just as would be seen on your smartphone. The user can issue voice instructions to get directions while driving.

– Music – stream, cast, or play favourite songs, playlists, and podcasts. Any app on the users smartphone such as Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music and so on can be displayed on the touchscreen, and songs and actions undertaken with voice command.

– Messaging – touchless and by voice. Whether using WhatsApp, SMS, WeChat or other messaging platforms, the user can have messages read aloud, or simply speak aloud speech to be converted to text ready to send.

– Handsfree calling – Leave your phone in your pocket and dial numbers or contacts simply by talking. Use voice commands to check your calendar, play podcasts or engage in a team’s meeting.

– AirPlay and MiraCast – cast content from your phone (or tablet) onto the screen. Kids can watch streaming services from your phone on the screen when used in the backseat. While this feature might be restricted in cars with CarPlay built-in, the Navig8r Portable Wireless Touchscreen has multiple uses even out of the car thanks to its portability.

– Powered by USB – take it anywhere and keep it powered through any USB power source

– 7″ LCD screen with IPS – Using a high quality In-Plane-Switching LCD panel, the 7″ screen offers improved colour accuracy and consistency as well as a wider viewing angle.

– Bluetooth & Wi-Fi – Wireless connection from your smartphone means the phone can be left in the users pocket, handbag or backpack. Once connected, the pairing is saved so that next time the user gets into the car their phone is automatically re-connected.

– FM transmitter – with a choice of preset stations on the device, it can be simply tuned to FM radio to be enjoyed via the cars audio system or the device’s built-in speaker.

– Extendable Windscreen mount – offers a variety of installation options from close to the driver to a centrally located position. The extendable windscreen mount is adaptable for all windscreen types.
